GPS Tracking for Electric Bike Owners: Monitor in Real Time

How a Startup Rented Out 5K+ Electric Cycles Rides Without Losing a Single One – The Power of Connected Devices

Recently, I came across a pitch on a funding reality show where a startup was offering rental electric cycles with zero security fees. They claimed that despite renting out cycles more than 50,000 times, they had never lost a single bike. At first, this sounded almost impossible.

However, with the right technology, it is not only feasible but also a game-changer. The key? GPS tracking.

Let’s explore how GPS trackers make this possible and what considerations you should keep in mind if you are planning to implement a similar solution.

1.) The Role of GPS and Backup Battery

GPS devices require a power source to function, which is why they work with electric cycles. However, what happens if someone tries to steal a cycle by placing it in a truck? The cycle’s main power source would be turned off, causing the GPS to stop working.

This is where a backup battery comes into play. A well-designed GPS tracker should have an internal battery that allows it to continue transmitting location data even when the main cycle battery is off. The backup battery doesn’t need to last indefinitely, but it must provide enough power for a quick response. This ensures that any unauthorized movement is immediately detected and reported.

2.) IoT and Cloud Computing Integration

Having a GPS tracker and a battery is only part of the solution. The next step is ensuring seamless communication between the GPS device and a cloud-based system.

The GPS tracker continuously sends data to a cloud server, which then updates the end-user interface in real-time. This allows users to monitor cycle locations, track movements, and receive alerts. Without IoT and cloud computing, GPS tracking would be ineffective, as the data would have no efficient way of reaching end-users.

3.) Geo-Fencing for Automated Monitoring

One of the biggest concerns in rental businesses is constant tracking. Do you really need to monitor every cycle all the time? The answer is no, thanks to geo-fencing.

With geo-fencing, you can set virtual boundaries, such as a specific city or a particular set of pin codes. If a cycle moves beyond these predefined areas, an automatic alert is triggered. This minimizes the need for manual tracking while ensuring security.

4.) Beyond Tracking: Unlocking Business Insights

GPS tracking devices offer more than just security. They provide valuable data insights that can optimize business operations.

  • Live tracking: View the latest location of any cycle.
  • Speed and distance monitoring: Analyze how bikes are being used.
  • Business reports: Identify high-demand areas and optimize your rental locations.
  • Data monetization: Leverage movement and usage data for strategic decision-making.

The Future of IoT

With IoT-enabled GPS tracking, the reach of rental businesses becomes limitless. The ability to track, analyze, and secure assets in real time transforms operations and enhances customer trust. If you are planning to launch a similar rental business, investing in reliable GPS tracking and cloud integration is the key to success.

By leveraging the power of technology, you can eliminate theft risks, optimize operations, and maximize profitability. The future of rentals is digital, and those who adopt smart solutions early will lead the way.
